Re: Women's Road Race

Excellente - was on edge of seat for last 20 k and still wasn't sure who would win!
If only all races were this exciting

PS No fan of Eurosport, as you may have noticed, but their commentators today did an excellent job - didn't miss a break (except when Italian TV did it for them), knowledgeable, interesting - Better stop now - I'm tempting fate. They may be back to their usual incompetent self tomorrow (Oh and SCM - I have emailed them to let them know, before you start!)

Re: Women's Road Race

Watched it on BBC Interactive. Good commentary from Hugh Porter (did excellent job during the time trials too, considering the Italian TV ignored the GB riders!) and Chris Boardman. Glad I wasn't wearing a heart rate monitor during the last lap - it would have blown a gasket (if they have them). She is our best rider by far.

Re: Women's Road Race

That was the best race I've seen for years, and what a fantastic result. Nicole has just secured my vote for Sports Personality of The Year.

The Italian director hasn't.

Re: Women's Road Race

Watched it on RAI Sport. Only two very short breaks - literally seconds./ Lots of shots of Armistead in the break, and Pooley and Cooke following. There were waxing very lyrical about both of them. "The Queen of Wales" and the teamwork of Pooley.
That finish was to quote the Italian commentatot again "Strordinaria".
I was shouting encouragement to Nicole so much they probably heard me in Wales.
That was also the biggest happiest smile I've ever seen on a podium.

A well deserved triumph, she's been the moral world champion for some years now.

Re: Women's Road Race

That was the best road race of any kind that I can ever recall seeing. Truly astonishing with all the hard attacks and all the fight-backs. They were all visibly tiring at the end, showing how they were on, or over, their limit. I thought that the Olympic womens' race was the best of the year - this was even better, and all the more exciting because it really didn't look like Nicole Cooke was going to win.

I agree with johnstrac by the way: she "deserved" the Olympic gold for being the world number one for so long, and this is just an extraordinary icing on the cake.

It's not even on the front page of the sport section of the BBC website.
I know it's a football, cricket and rugby day, but at least a Brit has actually f'''king won something. Considering all the post Olympics fuss, I would have expected a bit more.

The BBC only cares about the track - 'cos it's easier to televise and their beloved track heroes can spend the rest of the year poncing around on a Question of Sport and with Jonathan Ross or posing for smutty calendars, while real cyclists like Nicole and Cav are doing something a bit more meaningful like winning races on the Continent...

Re: Women's Road Race

I've just watched the highlights, it was a good race, I was surprised how little belief Harmon had in Cooke. Emma Davies Jones has history with her and seemed to want the swede to win.

But Nicole won, fantastic! It was only a matter of time.

Re: Women's Road Race

Not having realised this afternoon that the BBC were showing it live I watched RAI. Just saw the last 10km on the BBC I Stream and have to agree with the previous post. The Italians were so much more positive in their attitude to Cooke - remarking on her tactical prowess and strength. There was none of the "they'll never catch up" negativity of the Beeb. They were much more tactically aware of what was going on.
But at least the Men's Race is on live and highlights on BBC2 in the evening.

Got to agree, Cooke is a fantastic rider, and like, in so many sports, women are leading the way

Re: Women's Road Race

I watched the highlights on the BBC red button, even though I knew the result it was still fantastic to watch.

So that's Cooke World Champion and Olympic Champion
Pendleton World Champion and Olympic Champion
Hoy World Champion and Olympic Champion
Wiggins World Champion and Olympic Champion
Romero World Champion and Olympic Champion

So BBC sportsperson of the year? I can see it now.
A 5 minute spot congratulating Britain's cyclists on their achievements this year.
And the award goes to Hamilton for driving a car (which is better than 90% of the other competitors) around a track.

Re: Women's Road Race

Nicole was fantastic. Not only is she an exceptional cyclist but a brilliant tactician too. She managed her efforts to perfection. I thought I was going to have a heart attack in the final 5 minutes. Was that finish ever going to come in sight?!
Such a superb win I shall be watching that again very soon.
Nicole has such a lovely personality too, really open and genuine. Don't mind admitting there was a huge lump in my throat and a few tears on my cheek at the finish.

Well done Nicole .You are the best in the World and long may it stay so.

Re: Women's Road Race

Blistering ride from Nicole, and it was great to hear her views on the race and other things in the Eurosport commentary box this morning. Luckily Emma Davies-Jones wasn't in the box too or I guess there could have been some fur flying!!

Emma was definitely saying that she wanted the Swede Johanssen to win. In fact, I only came in towards the end of the race and none of the commentary team were talking about Nicole being in the break. I had to notice it for myself. She's got a unique style of riding, like she's kind of wrestling with her bike rather than riding it. You just can't miss her can you?? Chapeau Nicole!! She still sounded excited this morning.

Re: Women's Road Race

The BBC showed the whole of the men's race in interactive today and Hugh Porter had a good chat with Nicole while today's race was unfolding. Six hours of uninterupted cycling on the BBC - can't be bad.

someone shoulf have told our mens team. Seems most of them thought it was a 4.5 hour race! Nil point for 'le quitters' (downing aside)

Because a couple of fat golfers can't be seperated after 4 days play the men's highlights are on the "red button".
Please can someone explain how I get this ?
I have digital and I go to BBC 2 and press every red button I have and nothing happens.

Re: Women's Road Race

Excellent race - that's the best women's race I've seen for years, and Nicole rode a brilliant race to win it. I thought she'd blown it when she attacked with 3kms to go, but she held on and her class saw her through it. It was a much more exciting race than the men's!

Great race and she made a perfect finish. It's shame about teh jersey design and that it's the only time of year when you really see womens racing on TV
