After reading Jim Rees interview in the comic,I was wondering if we could do an around britain ride. With each of us doing about 100 miles each in our own county.I know this will take some organising but maybe C.W. might take the challenge up through the mag.We can do it for a charity or loads of different charities. What do you think, and would anyone be interested.

I'm up for it. Defo.
The CW Friendly forum ride..!
two charities, a kids one and a cancer one - Also putting money to the Dave Rayner and Braveheart funds?
Sure I could raise a few hundred quid or so.

The old C+ forum did it using a jersey as the baton. Took 'em so long the forum had suffered a major collapse before the relay finished.

I like the idea of this, is the idea to stick to the coast as much as possible, or is it a more general ride to tour as many counties as possible?
Dave.

It needs a kind of purpose.
Hey - maybe we could take charge of delivering one of those prize cycle-computers for the CW! It'd be a darned sight quicker than their usual delivery service...
Oh, and would I be allowed to turn the 100 miles into a week-long cycle tour - panniers, bar-bag, Thorn Club Tour, the lot???

Excellent idea Chris, although it sounds like a logistical nightmare, better not let the TOB organisers get involved - especially around the Yorkshire area Anyway, you can count me in, but Id prefer it if it wasnt until at least May as I'm a bit of a lazy old git in the winter and it'll take me that long to get my fitness back for a hundred miles on the roads down here

It would be interesting to know how they did it.
I was thinking around the coast but I think we will need the help of the comic to get it organised, and the time of year would have to be to suit everyone.Perhaps next september, especially if we have a summer like this year.

Better not get the comic too closely involved. They'll have us applying for biological passports, pissin' into bottles every 5 miles, wearing silly rubber wristbands, and heaven help anyone with a Spanish-sounding doctor!
And more to the point, they might even confiscate my handy hip-flask of Armagnac...

They just found volunteers within riding distance (I know, everywhere's within riding distance of you have enough time!) of each other so each "stage" was from one forummer to the next. There were a few "lulls" by some riders, which is why it took so long. There was a long thread at the time which you may be able to find if the old web-site is still accessible.

I think we would need to put a time limit on each portion - If you get a section, you must do it within 3 days or something like that. Otherwise it would take forever.

Given that Jim Rees was the initial inspiration for this ride, surely it should be run off as a non-stop 'Race across Britain', relay-style. In which case, midsummer would be the most sensible time to do it, as there's just a few hours of darkness.
And no need for this C+ style pottering about enjoying yourself type of thing. Heaven forbid, if I remember correctly, they even found time for an odd spot of romance on the way. And we certainly wouldn't want anything like that on this forum, the last refuge of the cycling obssessive. No, it would have to be something altogether more challenging and unpleasant.
Oh, and by the way, you can put my name down for following in the team car, yelling instructions...

Sound's like a good idea and a lot of fun.
I'd be willing to do a section through North Devon.

Great idea as it happens. Do we have members in every costal county?

I'll do the entire Wirral coastline I'd also be a volunteer to help organise it, there's a lot of technology at our disposal now, various route planning web-sites, blogs, forums, Google maps etc etc. It shouldn't be too hard to split up the coast into ridable sections and apportion responsibility to ride them.
Dave.
