'uphill' training on a trainer
      #29084 - 29/07/2008 13:05

was thinking of getting a trainer to simulate riding uphill over a prolonged distance.
any thoughts on whether a real wheel 'A frame' or rollers can be angled to give the feeling of cycling uphill?

various examples here

Rather than tilting yourself upwards, you would be better simulating climbing by using a bigger gear or a turbo with resistance.
Just angling it upwards is very daft. Like saying, "ride from London to Newcastle because it is uphill all the way."
Happy climbing.

Turbo set to Legstun mode5, big ring on the front, smallest on the back and grind away.

I raise my front wheel about 6inches, then alter my gearing and resistance, aiming my cadence around 70rpm to simulate riding uphill on my turbo!

I have an old Tacx Grand Excel which I upgraded to I-Magic last year. Simulates mountains extremely well, and with the Virtual Reality DVDs you get to see them to.

I myself like to angle my bicycle downwards so that I can freewheel whilst eating cake. On occasion I also put a fan behind me to simulate a tailwind. You can buy my book 'Training the Easy Way'; available in all good bookshops.

When riding up hills you sit a different way, taking more weight on your butt, sit more upright and open up your chest more, so by doing big gear rides on the turbo only work the legs etc however raise the front end and you start simulating the other body effects of hills as mentioned, so jack the front end up and bang it in a bigger gear and start to feel the hills burn
