Turbo training blues
      #32720 - 01/09/2008 20:49

Anyone know a good way of passing the time whilst on the turbo?
I've watched all the cycling videos, listening to music's ok for a session or two but staring at the garage door for an hour is not making me want to go back in there.
might try watching a film or a couple of episodes of the Simpsons.
What does anyone else do?
I know there'll be a load of you saying try cycing outside not always an option I have.

Put the Darkness - 'Permission to land' on the stereo, great for an intensive workout!

If you can afford it, get some rollers to give an alternative indoor workout.

Have done it this summer due to pesky broken wrist. The answer is......... there is no answer.
Just get on with it and really enjoy `proper riding` in the open air when you can.
The turbo may be boring but it teaches you to suffer really well.
Sorry!

As I've said on another thread, rollers and DVD.

Box sets are great - 24, prison break etc. Kind of show that makes you want to watch 'just one more'.

That album is only 38 minutes long!!! It will have to be really intensive!! Learn to love the pain, it will never be fun!

Take the turbo outside and do it in the sun and listen to the birds etc. Or for a more authentic experience set it up on a trailer and get someone to drive round the streets pulling you.

That's a great idea!
Try searching the interweb for training schedules. If you have a computer with cadence or a HRM you can do specific sessions for specific results. The ones I did seemed unnecessarily complicated on the print-out, but then I realised that I'd been concentrating so hard the time just flew by. A word of advice though - put the instructions in a clear plastic bag otherwise the paper just disintegrates under the shower of sweat [nice].
Alternatively with enough practice you can achieve a Zen-like state of calm and tranquility, bordering on catatonia. Very relaxing.

I used to turbo train to Lost (friend taped for me when Sky fell out with Virgin Media) and found that I was inclined to train more frequently so I could catch up on the next episode as it always finished with a "cliffhanger".

Also trained whilst watching the TdF on TV and pretending to be in the peleton!!!

Don't forget that you need tput the bike in the back garden if you're training for cyco-cross or MTBing - far more effective that way. Especially having knobblies on the rollers - now that really boosts your bike handling skills!

Agree with this.
I must be a weirdo because I enjoy turbo training as a means of training as opposed to a means of rding my bike IYSWIM.

Somehow, and maybe bizarrely, I find repeated intervals up a hill or same stretch of road less enjoyable, with more distractions as the school bus/tractors/Mr Dawdler in his slowmobile/other cyclists who make me feel self -conscious get in the way when I am supposed to be pulling painful expressions and chomping on the bars winning the sprint in my head or beating my five-minute pb.

On the turbo, I am totally focussed and more in control, able to watch heart rates, count revs, monitor speed and the rest. I think the key is that it is essential to occupy your mind. Music and reading are no-nos, they just stop me from training properly - you have to have have the computerised gizmos to monitor the ride.

All in all, I really believe that if you are bored, you are not trying hard enough.
