A stage of the tour, a whole tour or even the Tour of Ireland, YOU MUST DECIDE?

Good post Eric!
Off the top of my head, I;ll go for the stage that Millar won in the 89 tour, but i'll have to have a think!

The 1970 ECCA 25 on the Southend Road, where Smokin Joe stunned the watching hoards when he managed to snatch first handicap with an awe inspiring ride.
It is still talked about today, though the '89 Tour does run it close.

The stage of the '97 Tour de France when Pantani destroyed Ulrich and won the race in the one day!
Failing that then the '99 AC Yule trophy in Garlogie

even champions take it easy now and again between stages and attacks
but this race has been going steady all your life without pause...

Despite the fact that it was spotted Dick himself, Virenque's victory in the Paris Tours will take some beating for sheer excitement.

I won't claim this the greatest ever, but one of my favourite video clips is for Paris Roubaix 1986, when Kelly won the second time. Horrible day for racing produced a great spectacle, that has the ability to transcend than the dodgy american intro and "Dramatic Music" on this youtube vid (though I actually really like the music now from watching this so often).
Other favourites would be La Plagne 1987, when Roche finished 5th seconds after Delgado thought he'd won the TDF, and Pantani on Les Deux Alpes in 98.

Great fun, Bluebeard. Cheesy American clip, Liggett a prize chump as always.
But
Kelly - all time superhero. He can sprint, he can graft, he can climb, he doesn't need a helmet, he is indestructable, he is cool and unflappable. Fantastic.
Two hard men in 2nd and 3rd, Rudy Dahnens and Adri Van der Poel.
Look at Moser - one of the most stylish riders EVER.

"Is it the train of fortune, or the emissary of the devil!"
You've got to love how clearly that French girl is laughing at Lemond's gear smash at about 1.20

Bernard Hinault Liege bastogne Liege 1980
Desperate conditions with snow throughout resulted in only 21 finishers out of 171 starters.
The Badger won by almost 10 minutes from Kupier, epic stuff!

Another Hinault, the one he lost to Lemond after that battle through the mountains. Channel 4 were playing "When the going gets tough".

Hard to argue with the greatest performance ever in the greatest race - just a pity he was too old for the Young Rider's Jersey

He was 24 in 1969 so would have been eligible, surely? Just a pity there wasn't a Young Rider's jersey in those days.

For me a true great race was the one where the French Anti-Doping Agency were chasing Riccardo Ricco after stage 4 of the 2008 Tour de France...the best man one that day!!! Pity the little s**t is back soon!!!
