Morning All
5 weeks into recovery of my badly broken Collarbone including displaced bone now sticking up through the front of my chest (not through the skin though rubbing badly) and a dislocated shoulder (not requiring manipulation, it popped back in again.
Ok, so heres the thing, the ortho was in a bit of a hurry at my last appointment (at week 1 1/2) and my next appoint is not till week 8. He was very hurried in his instructions and they really only went along the lines of you can take your sling off now and again from week 2 and "stir a bucket" action from the same time. After 4 weeks you should have full range of motion, we'll get you back in 12 months to cut the ends off the bone sticking out because I don't want to operate, it is healing nicely.
So I did my stir the bucket and lifting my chicken wings and took the sling off and it seemed to be okay and I wound up taking the sling off completely at the end of week 4 until a couple of days ago after talking to a physio friend who said I should be lifting the arm straight up with the other arm helping to bear the weight.
Now this was agony after 2 lifts and it turns out this is because of the dislocation and another paramedic friend told me to put the sling back in as the tendons and ligs are stretched and will not return to their normal position.
So, in short ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!! I am now so confused I don't know what I should be doing, I have been back in the sling and it is feeling better, still agony to stretch the arm straight up and you can hear it clunking when it pops out and back in the socket. Should I be keeping on doing this ? Should I just leave the sling on and watch my arm wither, or should I harden up and put up with it ??? And most importantly.....WHEN CAN I RIDE MY BIKE AGAIN !!!!!!
I am 43 and this feels really, really important to me......
Thanks in advance guys Sean

Hi Sean,
I can't give advice myself, but have you e-mailed Cycling Weekly direct? Their medical advice seems good. Can you find a different physio, who seems to care a bit more? My friend broke his collarbone at Herne Hill, and was also surprised by the apparent lack of interest from the medical profession. Good luck with it.

Generally you should keep your arm in sling for 6 weeks post dislocation BUT you do need to take it out and exercise GENTLY as described by your physio friend, just lift as far as is reasonably comfortable not in to the painful range. You don't describe in which direction your shoulder dislocated(did it pop out forwards) but you want to avoid outward rotation of your arm as this would push the "ball" forwards on the "socket". Not much of a socket either in the shoulder so you will have to rehab your shoulder muscles to regain stability of the joint. you need to find a local sports physio or at least one who specialises in shoulders to guide you through this in more detail.

I'm recovering from this type of injury at the moment and am not expecting to get out on the bike for a couple of months, as i dont want to fall off and make matters worse! i'm turbo training at the moment to keep up the fitness levels, and using a squash ball to exercise my wrist and forearm!!!!! You need to see a shoulder injuries expert, and you'll probably have to pay! but it will worth it long term, a consultation should be about £200. this is the route i'm going down. i agree, its very fustrating and at 45, its an injury i could do without!

A motorcyclist hit me from behind last year and I fractured my elbow. My doctor said no activity for two weeks (in a sling) and then put me in a physio program. This consisted of two visits a week for aqua (swimming pool) therapy for 2 months. That means playing with kid's toys in the water, slowly at first. My physio showed me exactly which excercises to do. I also recieved accupuncture, heat therapy and sound therapy. My elbow is just fine now and I installed a rear view mirror on my bike. Hang in there, it should be OK. It took me a total of 3 months before I could ride again. I started running to keep in shape but it's nothing like a ride.
