Try it, I may be smaller than you, but I may be harder.

Think Barry McGuigan, just no moustache and Kentish, not Northern Irish.

Or a larger, prettier Pantani.

It appears vegans are thin on the ground, I've always known that, but as a vegetarian of er...26 years it's odd to think of eating anything meaty.

Oooh err!

Not personally, but let us not forget the ill-fated vegetarian Linda McCartney cycling team. Apparently the riders all had to sign a declaration to say they wouldn't eat meat - and used to sneak in pork pies to training camps.

Anyway, you might be interested in the Vegetarian Cycling & Athletic Club:

Those photos actually bring a genuine question to mind that ive always wondered about. Is it something in meat that assists with tanning skin? It seems to me (maybe wrongly) that most vegetarians are a little peely wally is it to do with diet?

Our best-ever climbing specialist and Grand Tour rider - Robert Millar - was vegetarian. Didn't seem to do him any harm. He said that his body just seemed to work better on that kind of diet.

Veganism sounds a bit extreme to me, but then someone very close to me nearly died on a vegan diet. It was horrible to watch. And you have to be very careful and take vitamin B12 to prevent pernicious anaemia, especially if you're young.

I believe that about 1/3 of the population of India is vegetarian. They seem quite tanned, in general.

(Sorry about that but bigold drove me to it)

I don't suppose that vegetarianism leads to sex/gender problems, but I could be wrong.

The vegetarians I know are a very healthy bunch. I'm almost a vegetarian, but mainly because I can't stand the thought of eating meat. I'll eat oily fish because it's good for me, though - I put my health before any food "fads". And I have a wonderful tan, which I think is more down to my ancestry (anglo-belgian) than my diet.

And round-the-world record-breaker Mark Beaumont's a vegetarian too- and he looks pretty rugged to me!

I bet they'd look pastey even if they ate meat.

I seem to remember that Mark Beaumont had to give up his veggie ways to avoid starvation, I could be wrong.
I know a vegan who did the Etape one year. France does not exactly embrace vegetarians, let alone vegans. He struggled to find enough to eat.
I think you have to strike a balance. Many people eat far too much meat, as it is relatively cheap now. I will have a few meat-free days a week, Veg stir fries or pasta sauces can be delicious. One of the healthiest generations of recent years was the one that lived through rationing.
I think any self imposed regime that requires dietry supplements is questionable.

I keep trying to tell my veggie wife & daughter that a non smoking, teetotal, vegetarian marathon runner will not live for ever - it just seems that way 'cos their lives are so *Bloody* boring!

Being Vegan is strange to me because it seems that the only reason most do it is because they don't want to consume anything that comes from animals (rather for than religious reasons or allergic reactions etc.).

I don't really see the problem with dairy; people have milked cows for centuries, up in the Austrian mountains Heidie is sat squeezing daisy's teets, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, what's the beef? Daisy loves the attention and probably even flirts a little by wafting her tail to and fro...ahem, anyway.

I didn't eat meat for 11 years, I'd just gone off it. I was not an animal rights activist and would cook it for others, I just couldn't stomach it for reasons unknown. Now I eat it, rare, bloody as hell, and I love it.

Also, I have a problem with Soya which some people purvey and market as an ethical alternative. Soya cultivation contributes to the destruction of the rain forests more than you'd think, it is one of the fastest growing contributors its demise, something like, over 1 Million square meters have been destroyed to harvest soya beans (for human and animal foods).

So some Vegans (who if were are honest and without stereotyping too much) mostly will argue that the agressive meat eaters are destroying the earth, when actually they contributing maybe even more than your average carnivor.
