Getting Back after Flu
      #35578 - 24/09/2008 12:48

This may sound like a stupid question but please bear with me as I am a novice. I am just getting over the flu, was off work all last week and am only just feeling better.

Before I was ill I was doing around 100 miles per week - 40 on a Sunday and two or three commute rides of 25 miles per day. What sort of thing should I do to get going again? Dont want to over do it and then be ill again. Is it ok to do my commute ride straight off (12.5 miles in and 13.5 miles home) or do I start off at 5 miles per day and build up from the bottom again. What distance should I make my long weekend ride to start with? Should I be taking a recovery drink or an energy drink for a few days before I start again?

Any help and tips would be welcome.

Many thanks,

Just get back on and do what you can, don't set any distances or anything. If you feel good to go, do it, if you don't...

I don't see the point of recovery drinks for novices/people who are not pushing themselves to max (or failure in weightligting). The drinks are loaded with nutrients that if you are not losing (and you won't on a short ride like that) you won't replace and your body will just store it all up as fat.

If you are going 40 miles plus then energy gels or drinks will help but recovery drinks are pretty pointless IMO. Save your money until you need it.
