Stuart Holdsworth - DEAD
Its just not right.
One of cycling's characters and good guys.
So many friends and acquaintances have died in this way - its absolutely tragic.
If there was a death in boxing, football, rugby, even motor racing, there would be a public outcry.
When a cyclist dies nobody bats an eye.
Its a disgrace.
There is something so wrong with the general motoring public's regard of cyclists.
RIP, Porky.

I completely agree. there have been more deaths in the sport in the last two or three years than at any time i can remember. it is entirely down to driver attitude and ignorance. it is about time that the cycling world rose up against this and lobbied the government and any other body about improving driving standards before any more of our friends or even ourselves are killed. in my daily commute and training run to work there is not day goes by that i am not endangered by mindless idiots in cars.

A change in legislation is long overdue! Too many careless drivers involved in fatal accidents involving cyclists are let off with minimal sentences or even just fines!!
Respects to the family and freinds of Mr Holdsworth.

That's dreadful news, and there's been far too much of it over the past few years. It seems like the authorities consider that this heavy toll is ok because because cycling's classed as a 'high-risk' activity. It's only high-risk because of all the selfish, thoughtless motorists on the road. We're making use of the public roads to go from A to B like any other road-user so why should it be riskier for us than for any other class of legitimate road-user??
Heartfelt condolences to the family.
(On the subject of accident victims, does anyone know how Simon Doughty's doing these days?? I wonder about him every time I see his Long-Distance Cyclists' handbook on our book-shelf.)

That's very sad. I suspect he wasn't given enough room by the car driver who "forgot" he was towing a caravan. It's nearly happened to me before.

I think it's not just cyclists they disregard - it's everyone from cyclists, horse riders, walkers - even other motorists. It's been said before - and it's true - that a car has become a cacoon and people drive with scant regard and/or ignorance of the damage that can be caused by lack of attention and speed. As someone on the forum has already suggested; every test should include being made to ride a bicycle down a busy road with cars rushing past you at 60mph inches from your shoulder, then, just maybe, they will realise the dangers to other road users when they get behind the wheel. Once again, a tragic waste of a life. My condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP

The first cyclist to die on the roads this year was one too many.
I fear to think how many it is now.

Shame CW adopt the mealy-mouthed, non-judgmental 'in collision with' when the reality was the car was in collision with him. Or to use normal language, hit.

I totally agree. Maybe CW could help with this? I'm sure everyone on this site (and other cycling sites) would sign a petition or (as I have seen on other sites) create a letter to an MP that can be signed by individual forum members and then e-mailed directly to the MP.
My condolenses to his family and friends. RIP Stuart.

Quite right Plymchick.
Come on Cycling Weekly, get a form up and running now, Im sure we could get enough people to send one off to there MP to at least make them think.

Hopefully this will make the public see how many cyclists have been killed by careless motorists. A man and his wife were killed here recently because of a drunk driver. Perhaps the death of Mr.Holdsworth will help the public to realise that cyclists need more care and attention whilst they are on the road.

they drive the way they do because there is no real sanction against them, cars in france are built in exactly the same way....but driving standards r far higher (toward cyclists) drivers routinely get away with killing an maiming cyclists and then get limited bans an fines...why? there seems to be a "but for the grace of god..." attitude from the justice system. we all need to lobby r MPs for a change in the law and an end to the absurdness that does not allow for the consequences of bad driving to be taken into account. Why does n't CW start to loby parliament etc? maybe (try) to get the new transport secretary to explain himself? the SUN has done far more to get the law changed!!!!!
I did n't know Mr Holdsworth, but for what its worth, his family have my heartfelt sympathies.

Cycling Weekly could help a lot in this. begin a media campaign, letter to MP's, ask readers to take helmet cams on their commute to work or training runs and you will capture no end of moronis behaviour by drivers (and probably cyclists i guess). The profile of cycling in this country has never been higher. use the pro stars to lend their support and exploit it. remember all those killed and did not receive justice. now is the time to start something.

Sorry, I have nothing sensible to say. Drivers of cars and trucks should be more aware of cyclists. That's it. If there were more of us then they mught.
Anyone coming round to the Critical Mass point of view yet?

Victoria Pendalton recently commented that she feels her life is at risk from motorists - she would be a good person to head up the campaign - very high profile at the moment.

'collision' - that implys that they hit each other straight on... Hit, knocked off, ran off the road would be nearer the truth I'd bet.
CM not for me, I think that would just alienate further the people you are trying to get to.
Pendelton,Cavendish,Wiggins,Hoy featuring in a TV ad campaign complete with shocking images would work much better, especially after the Olympics. Get a few celebrities in 'off the telly' who cycle too, familiar faces that people instantly recognise (and like).
(An old woman tried to over take me on Sunday, fine, except she tried to do with whilst I was passing a traffic island in the road!? Logans Run anyone?)

Sad news indeed - Yet again. This is one too many. I shudder to think how many cyclists have been killed and injured on our roads this year - Anyone got the figures?
A great shout asking CW, Cycling Plus, British Cycling, Halfords, Sky, all high profile organisations with an interest in our sport - Which I do not think has ever had a higher profile. All could help greatly in gaining mass exposure through a camapign/tv ad/petition. Also a great idea getting our top stars to front a campaign.
Our next Olympic champions could easily be next, as could you or me. We can all tell stories of near misses, I had one whilst racing yesterday,
My sincere condolonces to Stuart's family and friends.
