It looks like the UCI are meaning business, from january 09 a 4 year ban will be the time to serve for cheating! Good start UCI, well done! http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/15102008/58/uci-introduce-longer-doping-bans.html

Great news.
Its fairly obvious that two years is not detering the potential cheats, so four years might make the scumbags think. Khol even admited he took CERA cos he thought it was undetectable. It still seems that some doctor or other is advising these guys as to the chances of cheating without geting caught.

I think that most would take something "undetectable" to improve performance.

very good news but the sooner we introduce life bans the better. Then the option would be simple, do what you love doing for a living, earning a good wage and the respect and adululation of the fans or have to pack up in shame and have to a 9-5 like the rest of us wondering what they could have done if only they hadnt injected.

do a 9-5??
More likely just write a few books or be allowed to "teach" younger cyclists.

Is this an edict from on high, or something to be consulted about?
Too often the UCI and McQuaid come out with something without thinking it through or consulting interested parties and listening to them. Hence all the pointless aggro with the Protour.
It would be good if the UCI could behave as the democratic governing body of cycle sport and not the ruling junta who must be obeyed.

If any of you guys were pros, and were offered the oppourtunity to dope, win more races and earn a bigger paycheck etc, would you say no, or would you take the risk. Try for a moment to get of the couch and put yourself in a pro's sweatey shoes!

Good point Bryan48, it's easy for guys here to criticise the pro's but realistically if a pro can't perform he ain't going to pay his bills and if all the other pro's are doping what choice do the new pro's have?

After committing so many years to the sport, missing out on further education to try and make it in cycling? Not so easy then to turn away from it and get a 'proper' job!

But unless they've been living in a total news vacuum then surely they know what they're getting into from the outset?

(unlikely to happen) they could start by outting the cheats - then they will only have to race against clean riders! If pro cyclists want the clean race they say they do, then THEY need to do something about it as well, instead of relying on the testing agencies to find the cheats.
As TWA says, they know what they're getting into.

So you suggest a new pro joining a team then reporting all the dopers (providing evidence to back your claims) just like that, with the team losing all it's star riders? Bit unrealistic I reckon, but in an ideal world yes that would be the case!

I just dont understand the dilemma. If someone is lying cheating scum then screw them. They made their beds let them lie in them. I just cannot agree with the 'everyone else was doing it so i did' mentality. Its so bloody feeble to blame others for your own actions. There have been things that i have dreamt about doing in life but owing to physical disability or not fitting a set of criteria i have had to alter the targets i strive for. Not cheat and steal to get what i wanted in the first place. Lilly livered idiots need to face facts, if they cant make the grade then take a step back and review goals. IF they believe everyone in the top level is cheating and they cannot win at that level just work for someone else OR if cycling is the dream career ride for a continental team and sleep well at night. Dont give your soul away for a pouch of silver its sad and pathetic.

And back to the length of the ban - two years is really neither here nor there to a pro cyclist. They earn so much that they never have to look for another job when they're suspended. They just spend two years training in the countryside then come back keen and refreshed. Four years might at least hurt them in the pocket enough to think about the consequences. I mean I wouldn't mind getting the sack if it meant that I could go swanning about on my bike for two years, without a care in the world!

Are you sure twa?
Basso and Heras were well paid before their suspension, but was Moises Duenas (caught at the TdeF, if anyone's forgotten). There is a world of difference between what the stars earn and the domestiques.
As I've said somewhere else, if the sponsors get fed up with the continuing drug failures, then the sport will contract and everyone will be on lower wages.
