Can anyone explain to me why Halfords Bikehut can wind up it's women's team and force Nicole Cooke to go to a foreign team when Halfords Bikehut should be thanking it's lucky stars that this world and Olympic champion is it's great opportunity to sell British women's and British cycling everywhere (not least of all it's cycling products as well).
What a waist of a golden opportunity and desperate short sightedness.

The problem Halfords have got is that casual cyclists don't buy road bikes and serious cyclists won't go near Halfords, so they might have found sponsoring a road team doesn't do much to sell bikes.

Very likely, but shouldn't they have thought of that beforehand, or has their accountant just found that out and chopped the funding?
How come they can then extend the men's team, not that I'm against that?

Have you read the home page?
Apparently she isn't going to a German team.
As to Halfords, they have tried to up their cred with the trade teams and the Boardman bikes, but maybe the accountants have noticed it isn't working, as you suggest.

Just read the news. Glad to know that I was not the only one to realise that loosing Cooke to a foreign team because of a missed opportunity could have been a serious error.
I wish them every success.
