Trick or treaters
      #38686 - 01/11/2008 00:22

Last year, I had loads of kids, going up to the age of fifteen(possibly) coming round on Halloween. I gave out sweets to the little ones with parents, and 10p to the older ones. It was annoying but part of modern town life, so I went along. The year before I had bought sweets but had no callers, possibly because our door bell wasn't working.

This evening I had one group of three, one aged 2(in a pushchair), one of 6 and a 9 year old leader, with about 6 parents hanging about on the pavement a few feet away.

I can't be grumpy about it now, my 4 year old went out with her cousins, and adult sipervision, and came home with loads of sweets.

I suppose they should be made to bob for apples, what a treat, like I was as a kid, and not allowed to beg for sweets and money. That's what Penny for the Guy was.

I do hope its dying out. American nonsense.

Instead lets burn effigies of the Pope like they do in Sussex, a much better way of marking Autumn and remembering our history, like the catholic traitor Guy Fawkes!

Excellent

We don't have "trick or treat " round these parts, we still have "guising" on halloween, in order to get a treat kids sing songs, poems, tell jokes, play music or perform little magic tricks, they still get a few sweets or an apple but never money and if you don't give anything no tricks are played on you, it's actually quite festive and traditional. Actually in 1735 the "witchcraft act" contained a claus preventing the consumption of pork and pastry on halloween...so much for sausage rolls!! Good job that law was removed..........in.....................1950!!

And to all the other Celts out there...happy new year! The summer is over and land now rests! Actually makes more sense than New year being January 1st!!! And what have the Romans ever done for us!!!!

just waking up form my Canadian Halloween party (Columbian style).

lots of beer and hot dogs and about 150 kids coming to the door.

we never did it when i was a kid in the Uk but i kinda like it, its sociable, and involves heavy drinking with occasional hot dogs.

yeah well i got up at 12 a little bit shakey...

got a gentle ride planned for the afternoon to work it all out.

we got our first bit of snow last week here in Toronto, but it was nothing really as snow storms go. yesterday was great though 19c and this week looks like its going to be a great one as well, i guess it might make its way over the pond to you lot in a few days.

but then we`ll be going sub zero for a few months. however i just blew half my wages on winter gear yesterday and i have a few training camps planned for sunny Atlanta Georgia for the worst times.

I`m kind of looking forward to it.

Trick or treat?
We called it turnip lantern night. Shows how old and how northern I am.
All they do now is turn up at the door and expect gifts or money. I dont recall being followed by my parents when we did the rounds in the late 50s, we managed to look after ourselves.
I suppose the poor mites are not alowed to do anything now without a health and safety audit being done first. Glad I grew up when I did.

Luckily there were no paedophiles back then.

Nowadays you can't move for them

Or something.

Or is it kids are dangerous lunatics?

I forget.

Down yur in deepest darkest where your sister is also your aunt it's spook night every night. I go for the three deadbolt lock system and make sure they're all locked before dark.

Was out in Soho and Camden last night and the vast majority of people appeared to be in fancy dress - whats that about.

We dont get trick or treaters as our door isnt accessable from the street but we did encounter some about 2 weeks ago. Outside a pub, gone 10 and hassled by about 7 kids, I'd say the youngest was about 5, the oldest 10 or 11, quite aggressively asking for money under the guise of trick or treat, no parents to be seen and even did the whole "make me" when the pubstaff tried to get them to move on. Was scary how aggressive they were willing to be.

I hate trick or treat, in the same way that I hate much of the ongoing Americanisation of our society and culture.

Never had any of the little blighters knocking at my door. Must have been the silver painted wellies I left outside the front door, wanted to make them think Gary Glitter was staying!

I've never been compared to Rev Ian Paisley before, by anyone..(what an honour)

Its strange how Martin McGuiness is his best mate nowadays, I wouldn't have seen that coming even 5 years ago.

I was just, badly, describing the situation in Sussex, of all places, as it stands today.

Nearly every town, and some small villages, have a Bonfire Society which raises money for a Bonfire and fireworks throughout the year. Come Nov 5th they have a parade of effigies, usually including Guy Fawkes, The Pope and some other choice targets like Brown, Bush, gypsies etc. which they burn and then have a party.

Its either a great tradition, or an odd display in the 21st Century depending on how you look at it.

As you're from Liverpool, I expect you know more about Orange Men than me.

No more Ulster politics please, I don't know much, and it seems neither does hardly anyone else, lets talk about steel/ alu/ carbon frames. Or not.

Most would regard it as an insult!!!

Very true - bizarre in the extreme!!

dangerously close to racist Wuv!!!

Mothers side staunch Orange, fathers more catholic than the Pope - grew up hating religion, obviously!!

Quite agree - will only end in tears (or a giant mural of Lance on Alpe D'Huez!!
