Another British World Champion though ... Not really a motor racing fan but I wouldn't begrudge the young chappy for the sake of a BBC tin pot trophy which doesn't really mean that much anyway. Well done Lewis

Motorsport is an oxymoron. When he pedals the car I might give him credit, in the meantime he just encourages petrolheads to drive like tw4ts.

To be fair - I think he has more <personality> than most previous winners.
Single minded and totally focused. Mot unlike a previous <future?> Tour winner.
I shall still be voting for Mr Hoy, but if he finishes 2nd, not a bad result.

Those in-the-cockpit shots they showed on the news make it look as skillful as a computer game. Talking of the BBC news it was interesting to note they gave loads of time to him coming 5th, followed by another disastrous cricket loss and not a word about the cycling successes. Despite the fact that they had the rights and had been showing it live all afternoon.

What has Tyler Hamilton won?
A fine cyclist, despite his dodgy past. Is he British? Can he win Sports "Personality" of the Year? Is he black? Thats seems popular right now.

We'll see who wins in America.
Rcruise, do you want to read everything I write in exactly the opposite way to how it was intended?
I thought you knew me better.

In my humble opinion I think Nicole Cooke should win S.P.O.T.Y.(is there a male and female sect. to be won? )but with the lack of cycling coverage , Hamilton will get it . At least when Cooke overtook her competitors they were knackered, didn't move over to let her through!!

That's exactly what I thought when I saw it on the news. It definitely looked like the other driver let Hamilton through. I wonder if any money changed hands.

when you look at it it's like someone winning the world championship for playing on his Xbox for 2hrs every sunday almost puts F1 in the same league as darts and snooker. Look at what Phil Taylor has done this year he's achieved almost as much as Hamilton bet he won't get a mention. F1 is just a millionares play ground there's nothing we can relate to in it at all. Training in all weather, suffering and sweating, scoring goals and tries, running to exhaustion and even trying to score 180. This is what we can relate to these are the things that make a difference in our lives, we watch it on TV and in our own little way we live it out on the streets on the roads on the pitch on the oche. Sorry to rant on but F1 really gets my goat sometimes.
ps. I want to vote for Phil Taylor for SPOTY but I kind of think it'd be a wasted vote, so at the expense of my beloved sport it'll be a vote for Hoy.

I completely agree. For me, Cooke has been the outstanding sportsperson from this island this year. No disrespect to Hoy, Wiggins et al., but she was ahead for me.
However, seeing as Hamilton won the XBox-matchbox motor championships (more effort required in F3000 IMHO), he'll get a huge boy-racer vote, so if any cyclist is to have a hope, it will be Hoy we should vote for, as he at least has had a good bit of air-time (much more than Cooke anyway), and has a lot of women I know in mild raptures, between accent and physique.

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with most comments on here. Having been brought up with an entire family in the motor trade and motor racing, I have some appreciation of how good Lewis Hamilton is. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work (and natural ability) to achieve what he has. I'd love to see Hoy get S.P.O.T.Y but with the way the british public jump on every sporting bandwagon (and BBC covering F1 next year) I can't see it happening. And as for knocking Phil Taylor, he may not sweat or get out of breath but he is still dedicated and extremely skilful (don't agree? spend 1 hour and see how many 180's you get!) I have a huge respect for all professional sportsmen and women and even if you don't like the sport it doesn't make it any less of an achievement to excel

I wasn't knocking Phil Taylor I'm a genuine fan, he's a local boy and our city's proud of him. I've 2 sporting fantasies one's on the road to d'Huez in front on my own the second is on the oche, worlds final 170 finish to win.

I would agree that Hamilton is a very talented driver, and F1 drivers have to be physically fit to cope with the demands of driving at those speeds. The sentiment behind my original post was one of disappointment that inevitably SPOTY will be awarded to a sport that I find tedious. Most of the public can identify with driving fast, lots of them do it all the time.

F1; The most expensive car wins - the cheapest car looses. How many points would Hamilton have scored if he'd been driving Jenson Button's car? F1 is just a high speed procession these days. The ITV commentary team ruined it for me by fawning over Hamilton to the exclusion of all the other drivers. I stopped watching F1 half way through the season because I was sick of the biased commentary and the sight of Hamilton. Nicole Cooke for Sports Personality. No offence to any of our track stars but riding round in circles inside a shed does not do it for me.
