Magpie

Has anyone ever eaten Magpie? What does it taste like?
There's loads round our way and I'm thinking about shooting a few.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was just thinking how dull and rather serious the Lounge had become and you've cheered me up! This is the kind of random inanity I come here for.
And in answer to your question, no idea. Pretty gamey I should imagine - all that roadkill.

Strange post..even for here, I have no idea but it is a member of the crow family, It will be edible but how good it will be...brave person! I heard as a kid that blackbirds were good eating but you need about four and twenty to make a decent pie..and shooting them is illegal! Magpies are classed as vermin so the farmers will be most happy to let you blast away over winter..as for doing your Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall impression...I would stick to wood pigeon for now!

Re- Ferg's comment about blackbirds - the French make them into pate (where's the accent key on this damn board??). They sell jars of the stuff in Corsica, which might be why there's never any birdsong over there.

The French also eat a type of bunting (can't remember the name) whole, bones and all. But then again the French eat anything that moves.

I think you are talking about the Ortolan. A tiny bird, that is killed by drowning in brandy, then cooked in some poncified fashion an deaten whole.
I'm told there is no birdsong on Sicily either, because they shoot everything in sight - including eachother of course.

Well if they are the same as Italians on the mainland then that will be right...don't give them guns. We had an Italian party pheasant shooting here once, they shot at an owl, a buzzard, they hit foxes, pheasants even when running, a black labrador,a plate glass window out of the big house, the side of a landrover, any songbird that flew by and because woodcock fly fast and low one of the beaters got hit as well, luckily at that range shotguns have very little penetrating power....They were never invited back!!! Absolutely mad..they always started each drive by yelling "Fire your guns!!!" in very bad english!!

Oh no the Americans are very safe...it's just in cities they go nuts! In the country they dress up like motorway workmen on night shift...they never shoot someone by accident...they know who they are shooting at!
