While I was away on holiday some scrote broke into my garage and nicked all my bike gear - bike, tools, workstand, pump, the lot
So, I'm looking for a new bike. As my new company runs the cycle 2 work scheme, I have a budget of up to £1000, to include lights (commute is on unlit country roads), pedals, and of course the bike itself. I'd like to go for a winter training bike that can take mudguards and panniers, but I need a sloping frame as I have short legs relative to my height.
Any ideas?

I'm sickened, Slowhand, you have my sympathy.
For that price get the best bike you can - Planet X or Ribble carbon with best groupset you can - eg Ultegra.
Then get a manky old thing 2nd hand or E-bay (maybe £50-£100), mtb or road, with full guards and lights or a dynamo for banging into Leeds to work and winter riding. Or a new single speed for £299 as advertised in CW.
That's if you work in Leeds (or within 15 - 20 miles).
Hope SA was good.

I actually work in Harrogate, so it's a 14 mile, hilly commute. I want a decent winter bike that I can also use on club runs. Thinking about getting my LBS to build one up based on either a Kinesis Racelight T or an Ambrosio frame

Nice ride - N.Leeds to Harrogate.
I had a Kinesis Racelight T with Ultegra as a mudguards bike before I changed to my current steed - it was a very good all round bike.

Dont know how tall you are mate but there are two immaculate winter cheapies on our club forum. Both quite new rarely ridden ribble bikies tooled up for winter then just spend the cycle to work scheme on a nice piece of carbon??

I have to agree with the rest of the mob. Go for a nice road bike, You can always stick a mtb whale tail on the back to stop the spray up your back until you get a winter bike, The Planet X deal at the moment is a cracker, wiggle have the 08 cayo... http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Focus_Cayo_2008/5360032366/ This raleigh looks a good buy too with campag oily bits http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/id38172.html

Can't ride the Cayo, it's standard geometry, so either it's too tall, or too cramped. Also, I can't buy from Wiggle on our Cyclescheme (we use Cyclescheme and Evans, but not Wiggle). The Raleigh is too big.
Does anyone know if you're limited to one bike on these Cycle 2 Work schemes?

Sorry slowhand will hunt again, what size do you need, I'm 5' 8" short legged and use a 52cm standard tube, you can fit a longer stem if need be.

52 would be the biggest size I would ride. IF I calculate my frame size using just my inside leg measurement, then it comes out at 48 (I have a 28" inside leg), but that is too small in the top tube. Probably a 50cm would be OK (or a medium sloping frame, equivalent to a 54cm traditional).

Sorry to hear of your loss
How about one of these from Cattlegrid's post elsewhere on the forum
http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/SL_Pro_Carbon_-_Dura_Ace_Build_Unbuilt.html
£900 for Dura-Ace and a full carbon frame, a bit much for a winter trainer but at this price...

For a do it all winter bike I'd stick with Planet X but ditch carbon and go with this: http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Kaffenback_105_Build.html Good reliable bike that would last you years!
