creaking seat post
      #39325 - 11/11/2008 16:09

I've got an aluminium audax bike which is great. I Save that bike mostly for Ironman 70.3 races and long training.Commute on a fixed. I've got a Brooks leather saddle and the seatpost the bike came with generally the whole bike is great.
Problem is my seatpost creaks in the frame and I just can't stop it. Take it out wipe it down put it back in and tighten -- 20 miles later creak.

Ideas

I'd suspect the saddle rather than the seatpost. I've had creaks from there caused by the bolt needing a tweak and the top and bottom of the clamp being slightly out of line.

Years since I've used a leather saddle, but doesn't that material tend to get a bit creaky too? Maybe the tension adjuster bolt needs tightening.

Have you cleaned the saddle rails as well, I was getting a creak where the seat post cradle clamps the rails. I took the saddle off, cleaned the rails and it was sorted.

I've got this problem too with a new Selle Italia saddle.
I've been told by my LBS to grease the saddle rails..

..i don't know if this will solve the problem as it's on my new carbon bike ..and i'm now using the winter one

The real strange thing is that the cheapo saddle that came with the bike doesn't make any noises!

Grease everything including the rails then tighten it - and give it some welly. Brooks saddle rails are known for this problem, it's an annoyance rather than anything worse but it can be fixed.
