Specialized Roubaix Comp
      #39790 - 19/11/2008 08:59

I am looking at buying a new bike for sportives etc and was interested in the article a couple of weeks ago on the new Specialized Roubaix bikes. My preference, based on the article, would be for the Roubaix Comp version at 1700 quid. However, the article mentioned that they would change the standard wheels and then maybe some groupset upgrades to shed a few grams.

What wheels would be a suitable upgrade for this bike? I have a set of Ksyrium SSC SLs on my current bike - would they be appropriate? Or is there something better out there?

And to save a few grams is it simply a case of upgrading from 105 to Ultegra SL? Starting with the chainset I guess?

Well I use the Ksyrium SSC SL wheels and think they will be a great choice to fit to the roubaix, No doubt there will be better..at a price as there always is but for sportives they are fast and light for climbing.
As for upgrading the 105 groupset, there are chainsets made by plenty companies that offer weight savings on the 105s so don't just think Ultegra SL, Changing the 105 cassette to Ultegra will save 2g!!! while fitting a Dura ace cassette will save 46g but is it worth £60? Rear derailleur is a 21g saving or 41g with Dura ace. You can spend hundreds to shave off 200g with a bike of that quality yet the wrong seat pack will cost you 100g, super light inner tubes can save 100g for £12 spent! Choose tyres carefully too, rolling efficiency and comfort is much more vital on a sportive than saving 20g.
It's well known that a wheel upgrade is the biggest single improvement you can make to a bike but why not ride the bike for a while, swap the wheels round since you have them already and make up your own mind but you might as well run the groupset, the 105 is good quality, fairly light and hard wearing. Also it feels better to be faster than folk on really top spec bikes, If it's comfortable, light and smooth live with it for a while!

The reason i dont ride wheels that i know i wont want long term is purely financial. IF the wheelset normally has its own retail value my LBS will discount that full value off of the bike before i start to negotiate a discount saving my 100's. (Although to be fair in this case it would only be £160.) That cash could pay for your dura ace cassette, a KMC ti chain,a2z ultra light ti skewers, and a pair of GP4000s tyres making a 300gram saving for nothing then just use your existing wheelset to slash anther 300+ grams and heh presto a deceent weight saving at no additional cost!
