In an attempt to make out how dangerous it would be for him to ride the Tour he's now made up a story about Eddy Merckx http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/nov/18/lance-tourdefrance

Why did you ask 'Eddy' or is it a case of the the usual closed minded 'lanceophobia'. Anyone who watched Lance on the duez mountain time trial (forget the year) where he was spat at and forced to change lines numerous times can see why he is a little concerned!

Erm, no I just happen to know, as I'm sure most other people reading that, that it's not true. Yes he got a punch, but it didn't break his rib, nor did he pull out of the tour because of it.

'Lance telling lies again'.
That's quite an accusation. Where's the evidence? Anything to back up your assertion would be appreciated (links, etc.) - wouldn't want CW disappearing under the weight of any libel action.

Ranger you are not reading the quote and you are seeing what you want to! " was out of the race " Does not necessarily mean he stoped riding it may mean he was no longer able to win the race. PLUS the quote may well state he would have won six tours if it hadnt happened but it doesnt actually state that the incident being discussed actually happened during a tour de france. It may have been on the lead up to a tour (or not). You see what you want to see Ranger - i read and think over the possibilities. I am not saying Lance is lying neither do i take it as the truth. After Lance has spoken, a journalist has written it down and trimmed the quotes for a more appealing read, who knows what context has been lost? Not me. But i do RTFQ!!!!

Apologies for that. Reading the Guardian article I assumed that Lance was referring to the time Merckx was punched in the tour, which is detailed in the second last paragraph of this http://www.cyclinghalloffame.com/riders/rider_bio.asp?rider_id=1 His version of events is different from the 'hall of fame' website, and he may not actually be 'telling lies'

Interestingly that link states that Merckx was punched in the stomach when wikipedia, the official tour de france guide and Eddy himself state he was punched in the kidneys, plus two of those sources add that he needed to take pain meds plus blood thinning drugs as a result of the assault - notjust a 'winding' plus it calls into doubt the accuracy of your source. Possibly just an issue of translation though. Merckx has stated he feered for his safety from the french fans owing to his domination of the event too.

Did any of the sources say the punch broke his rib and knocked him over?

Or maybe the Editorial should stick its neck out a bit...being sued dont mean they`l win! Imagine the state of the world if every Magazine / Newspaper took the same " safe" attitude. Watergate would never have happened for starters. I wonder when the "Weekly" bit will be changed to "Product List"?

That's up to the editor, feel free to email him.
My remit is this forum.

Equally, imagine the state of the world if every Magazine / Newspaper ran with any bit of gossip, rumour, innuendo, lie, or unsubstantiated report....

Whatever conspiracy theory floats your boat.
Mind you, why stop at IPC (BTW: you missed out Inspire, the title's publishers)? There's Time-Warner above IPC... Might even be able to rope in the Illuminati if you work at it.

People say they are bored hearing about the Armstrong comeback, I'm getting bored with all the 'Lance bashing', it's all getting a bit pathetic. (That's my opinion and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cycling Weekly or IPC Media)!

We both know he dod not fall in the incident that you have assumed to be the one being discussed. And none of the sources specifically quote a broken rib but thats the whole point I dont know, neither do you unless you are merckx? Also looking at the article they are actually in seperate scentances mening they MAY not have been associated comments. As good fans we are all aware Merckx did crash (with Ole Ritter) later in that tour and receive fractures.
Its called reading, if you do it maybe you wont just see what the slasher/editor wants you to see.

In fairness Bigold, did you ever think that you might just be seeing what you want to see as well?
Here's the transcript of the interview http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/nov/18/lancearmstrong-cycling-tourdefrance-donaldmcrae
"Do you think you might get shot during the Tour" is not a question I ever expected a cyclist to be asked.
