Yesterday morning Leicestershire cycling stalwart Dave Grundy was killed after being struck , apparently, by a speeding motorist on the A50 just outside Wigston , near Leicester. I was a former clubmate of Daves while I was a member of the Ratae RC after I retired from pro cycling. My brother Alex probably owes his life to Daves prompt action when he was knocked from his bike by a drunken driver , ironicly in almost the exact same spot, in 1987. When Dave came across that scene my brother was lying unconcious having suffered multiple skull and limb fractures while the driver apparently was pondering his options!. By the time my brother arrived at hospital he`d lost almost 5 pints of blood and there was doupt he`d survive the 8 hours of emergency surgery that he underwent and he remained in a commer for almost a week due the swelling on his brain. I type ths with tears streeming down my face at yet another tragic and senceless death. My heart goes out to all his family and friends. RIP Dave, you were a good egg.

Very sad news indeed-the road was still sealed off in the afternoon. The council were there in attendance with the police which I thought unusual.
I use to see him regularly on that stretch of the A50 in question.I understand the driver has been arrested though that is little comfort to friends and family.
A terrible tragedy.

Another criminal waste. I'll shut up before I say something stupid.

Ive found out the driver was a 73 year old male. His arrest would I think be a formality in the curcumstance and I think we do well to avoid recriminations when we dont know the facts. Though I fully understand the surge of anger many of us feel. Ive lost count of the number of fatal or very serious injuries ive heard of or know of personaly. Its been the most off puting thing of all from geting back on my bike over all these years.Makes me feel if ya ride long enuff its almost enevitable.

I admire your restraint about the driver, and extend my condolences to you. He must have been like a second father to your brother, responsible for bringing him back to life, after a fashion.
Another needless death of a good man on a bike. One too many for the umpteenth time.
RIP

Very sad news, condolences to family and friends.
We seem to say this far too often, about time the bloody government or powers to be taught motorist's to respect cyclist's.
I remember racing against a lad called Dave Grundy in the 80's up here in the North East,is this the same lad dazzricles??

A friend from our club who is from Leicester used to go to his house for drinks and stuff and now this man fills that same role in our club! Great to see how riders all over Britain influence one another.

I have been advised that Dave will be cremated on Tuesday 23 Dec, at 12.45pm at Nuneaton Crematorium.
Following the cremation, there will be Church Service at Gilmorton Church, starting at 1.45pm.
After the Church Service, mourners will be welcome at the Crown PH, Gilmorton.
