gear adjustment
      #39920 - 20/11/2008 12:38

I've just received my new bike from ribble and adjusted handle bars and seat to my liking.
Having used it for the first time today it will not go into top gear
Its the same on both chain rings, push the leaver across and the chain just starts to rub but not change.
I could start fiddling but don't want to make it worse.
What do i have to twiddle to make it work?
thanks
shimano 105 by the way!

If it's changing through the block on all gears except top then it's most likely that one of the screws limiting the movement of the rear mech needs adjusting - there's two of them one to stop the chain dropping off either end of the cassette, I think they should be labeled 'Hi' and 'Lo'.

Not sure which one you need to adjust as I always get mixed up between which is which and always adjust the wrong one first.

There's a pretty good video on YouTube which shows you how to do this, I can't post the link because the IT Nazis at work won't allow access to it. Have a search and you ought to find it quite easily, the bloke is setting up a Dura Ace mech but the principle is exactly the same for 105.

Hope you get it sorted soon bud,

MD

Yup it's the small screw marked "H" for high, Click it into gear so it's making the grinding noise then a half turn on the screw sould make it click into gear...bad of Ribble to send a bike out not set up, a little email off to them I think is in order!!

Unless it's got a little bent in transit?

Same thing with the front mech,Half a turn on the "H" screw should do the trick, Not too much or you will overshoot the chain.does the 105 shifters not have the ability to trim the front mech? I know the new cheapie Sora ones do, on a double chainset they have a half stop for each chainring...which is nice.

either that or more likely the assembler didn't pre-tension the cables.
When setting up transmission for the first time with new cables its important to grab the cables mid down tube and pull them away from the tube firmly and hold them under tension for 10 seconds or so.

This will bed in all the cable ends , stretch the cables and compress the outer cables.then adjust as normal. This usually eliminates the gear settings going out of adjustment in the first few hours of use.

I usually set it up then ride it as the main bike for a week. After 120 miles or so adjust everything and that should do for a long while.

Here's that YouTube vid. I learned a lot from it, might be useful for others too.
