Two bikes?
      #39979 - 21/11/2008 05:12

Why do people have a summer bike & a winter bike?
Is it they don,t what to get it dirty or something?

A bit of that (a winter of gritted and salted roads can mean more time cleaning than riding and does grind down moving parts) and also the added boost you get when you turn up on to a race on your best bike after a winter of training on what is usually a slightly less well specified bike. The little performance edge and mental boost can help no end in a race.

My winter bike is 6kg heavier than the summer bike, mudguards, rear rack, triple chainset and lights It's hard work compared to the summer bike but I can carry extra clothing-waterproofs, couple of tubes, spare tyre and plenty food for long winter rides. I also use slightly wider tyres on the winter bike. It's more like a tourer/audax bike but doesn't require a beard!
With tractors pulling half the field onto the road at every gateway and grit and gravel getting washed onto the road it makes sense to save the good summer bike and my back getting filthy, it also means I can fit nicer wheels and groupset to the summer bike than I would if it was my only bike since I can pick the days I take it out and enjoy the weight saving and quality. Oh plus an old frame on a turbo trainer is a handy thing.

One bike for commuting with heavier duty components and one bike for the weekend that's lighter and nicer to ride.

Yes that's it.

Having 2 bikes is probably nearly twice as good as having one, I expect.

Just the one myself, but I could probably make another with the spare bits.

Most 'winter' bikes started life as the 'best' or only bike, but were usurped. Same with most of the bits.
And as for shoes...well, my Christian Louboutins were an expensive upgrade, but like the carbon bike have a very specific job which they do magnificently.

I believe that carbon bikes are corroded by the salt/grit/poo and an aluminium or steel frame doesn't corrode when it comes into contact with these things!

Normally one flying machine, one tourer and a hack for commutes and shopping.
I gave the hack to my daughter in law so until I find the time/cash to build another it's been replaced by the tourer.
So that's why I've got to rebuild the Ergopowers sometime this week.

What if you don't have enough money to have 2 bikes, what should you do then?

Run a Dawes Galaxy clone. You can do just about everything with it.

Just start with one mate like we all did. Dont go too flash or it will age fast. Id recommend alu frame carbon fork and something like veloce or 105 - bianchi's are reasonable value. No doubt the rubbish bits will expire and you will replace them. When you are realy sure you want to commit to the sport then buy something lighter and nicer and keep what you already have for wet days and training miles. Welcome

Thanks for the advice, what do you think of these bikes? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=25459

I have also been looking at the Bianchi's-I think they look so cool!

For £500 they look a good value bike to me, over time you could fit better wheels which would bring the bike to life and drop a few grams too but as an off the shelf bike goes it looks good!
