Afternoon everybody,
At the start of this year I was overweight (14 stone), unhealthy and unfit. My clothes didn’t fit, I felt uncomfortable in my own skin and felt lethargic. I rediscovered cycling after a hiatus of many years and changed my eating habits and have since lost 23 lbs, I’m healthier, fitter and feel much better for it.
Ideally I’d like to drop another 5 lbs and get down to 12 stone but in the last couple of months I seem to have hit a plateau and if I lose a pound one week I find I’ve usually put it back on by the following week.
I’m 31 years old, 5’ 10” tall and as of this morning 12 stone 5 ½ lbs. I reckon I ought to be able to lose more as there’s still a bit of flab round my middle.
I eat well and don’t consume excessive amounts, I don’t smoke and hardly drink alcohol, and I exercise regularly on the bike and try my best to do a few upper body strength training routines per week as well.
Should I be able to lose more weight or is my body telling me that it’s found its happy medium? I’ve submitted my entry to what will be my first sportive in May next year and would really like to shift a few more pounds before then.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance,
MacDaddy.

McD,brilliant.I did the same and lost a lot of weight quickly by cutting out the nasty stuff and not drinking too much.I did, however, uplift my water intake to about 3 litres per day. With all the excercise I was doing the weight fell off me.It has slowed down now which is perfectly normal. As you lose body fat muscle starts to form.Muscle is heavier than fat and you will eventually plateau.Just be careful now with your diet and over the winter try and get out and ride as much as you can.Come the Spring you will probably notice the weight starts to reduce again after a probable Xmas lull. Keep at it!!!!!

Wow, congratulations on shedding 23lbs, that's quite something.
You could lose more weight, of course, by adjusting your diet/exercise balance - also known as eating slightly less and exercising slightly more.
But, if you have found a happy medium between the weight you are, feeling good and the amount of exercise you do (or have time to do), then why push it?
You could half starve yourself and flog yourself on the bike only to find yourself not enjoying it - and for teh sake of a few pounds when you've already come so far.
See how you get on in your sportive in May and then take it from there. You might even find that when next year gets underway and you head towards your sportive in May, when you should be doing a few more miles to get into training for the longer distance, that you will lose a bit more weight anyway.
Good luck

340 driver - totally understand bro, im having issues with my last 10 pounds. Thast said my fitness continues to soar.Im convinced its about continuity. Ive been pretty consistant (barring a couple of bouts of injury/illness) for 12 months now, if i crack on for another 12 im sure it will sort itself. Its fun dishing out pain to the skinny guys anyway!

I've lost 10lbs since the end of August. I think it's still falling but only slowly. I'll just keep away from the fat, sugar and most of the cakes and carry on riding the hills at every opportunity. On past experience it should eventually get back to 12 stone ish - just seems to be far more difficult with advancing age. Maybe the best cure is to buy an ounce of pipe baccy! and hope I don't get divorced.

I'm down to 10 3st now, but I would prefer to be 9 7st.
However I enjoy drinking alcohol, so its unlikely to happen.

Cut the booze completely and the food by a quarter! No empty calories.

Booze gets you drunk. That's not really a case of empty calories, more a mind altering substance.
I think everyone who really wants to lose weight knows all this stuff. The people who convince themselves they need a special diet are those who dont want to stop eating or increase their exercise.
I may be drunk though

I've heard some nonsense about booze though; like Champagne contains no calories, which is why professional jockeys drink it (from a former jockey). Diat Pils is not fattening, because all the sugar has turned to alcohol - Diat refers to foods suitable for diabetics, not dieters. The best one was that if you let Coke go flat, it is not fattening.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement. At least I feel better now knowing that perhaps the slowdown in weight loss is to be expected and, from what some of you are saying, I'm probably doing most of what I should to maintain my weight over the winter.
Cheers

Get your wisdom teeth taken out. It's hard to keep weight on when you can only eat jelly. I lost a stone [good], but bits of bone kept coming out of my gums [bad].

If you can find a copy of Audrey Eaton's F Plan that'll work. It's almost all fibre, so you feel full but it all comes out the other end.
