Just back from another brilliant week holidaying in D&G. Been there loads of times in past 10 years and for my money its got to be the best cycling location in Britain - a good network of really quiet roads, beautiful scenery and lots of fantastic tea rooms (at least in the summer). Also great wildlife - red squirrels (on one day we saw 10), red kites, ospreys, otters, even a chance of a golden eagle.

Glad you enjoy this neck o' the country .Never ventured too far out of D.&G. meself, nip into Englandshire now and again as part of one of the loops I do , living as close to the border as I do(10miles),road surfaces could do with a bit improving ,suppose that's the same country wide though . Many years ago I did fulfill an ambition and rode up to Edinburgh and back(148miles) took me 10hours ,was well knackered.Roads were a lot quieter then 1979/80

So you were the other bike spotted in the area!! Nice to hear you like the place, with the red kites you must have been around Gatehouse of Fleet to New Galloway area... well that's my guess anyway. Pity you got so much of that drizzle during the week.

Very helpful bike shop in Castle Douglas, so you were cycling around Loch Ken, down to Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, etc, Next time head to Glentrool, Straiton, Barr area and visit Nick o Balloch (2 miles long,820ft climb I think it's a cat 1 climb in the girvan road race) and the Di'els elbow road (5 miles 800ft) All empty single track roads.

Thanks for the suggestions. Actually it's not so much climbs as tearooms that we head for. Last week we were able to visit the ones at Moniave, New Abbey and Kirroughtree - all v enjoyable !
