While searching 'tinterweb trying to find more ways to cure the creak from the crank on my track bike I came across the suggestion of greasing the spindle before fitting cranks. Now I've never heard of this and I've been cycling so long Kirkpatrick Macmillan was my training buddy, but do you guys have any views on this. Am I about to be re-educated?

If it has threads or moves and wont come in contact with dirt...keep it greasy to stop the creaky!! B.B cups, pedal threads, cartridge bearings even a bit of lube on the skewars!
-------------------- Campagnolo....liquidation or oxidation....which will kill them first???

It's where the crank attaches to the BB I mean, I've always kept that grease free but I see some people disagree.

Instead of grease, I use anti-seize compound. Finish Line and Park make some specifically for cycle use (http://www.evanscycles.com/products/park/anti-seize-compound-ec011357). Seems to stop creaks and makes removal a lot easier.

Opinions are divided on this, the dry brigade says that lubricating it allows you to overtorque the bolt and force the crank further up the spline which may lead to it fracturing.

I greased the crank onto my square taper BB bearing last time I messed with it. That was many years ago though.
Why not? (Apart from the above) What harm can a bit of grease do?

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Never seems to matter either way.

I always have. I now make sure I never forget after a Stronglight 100 welded itself solid onto a UN52 axle - I'd forgotten the grease in a dash to get the thing ready for a camping trip. Anyone who's ever stripped the extractor threads and had to resort to automotive bearing pullers and a blowtorch will tell you what a pain in the 4rse it is.

this is my view too. If you are certain that the creaking is where the crank is making contact with the taper of the axle I would suggest using a new clean square edge file and lightly dress the inside mating faces of the crank fixing hole. If you look under a bright light you should be able to see where the crank faces are not mating properly with the axle faces.

Jobst Brandt has some interesting things to say on the matter.
