Come on bigold it's trumpet blowing time, we need details, your distance, time, average speed, gear ratios chosen, what you ate, how you felt, did you hit the wall at any time and weather. A full report is needed for future reference! It's your duty to the cycling forum ..and if you don't El_Cid will nag you until you do! Well done.

155km, 6500 feet of climbing devided into about 20 'minor' climbs. (regular 14/15 percenters) 5 hrs 34 min, 17.2 mph average used my CR1 with the triple + 12/25 (wont make that sportive mistake again!) During the ride consumed 3 gels, 5 half bananas , 4 pieces of flapjack, 2 cliff bars, 2 power bars and 5 litres of water. Wasnt aiming for gold was looking to do 6 hours so well inside personal goals plus the gold standard was a fringe benefit. Hurt like hell as havent ridden over 50 miles for 2 months. My 16.5 stone frame felt like 60 in places! As for weather started cold in mist but was sunny and 18 degrees in no time at all. Thanks for the congrats. Enough????

Plenty! So a lumpy sportive then..so no triple next time? If you used it the inner cog then you chose the right chainset for the job!

No i meant that the first sportive i did on a standard double (my other CR1) and that with a lumpy profile the inner ring saves a lot of energy for the fuller figured gent! As a result i WILL b using the triple for lumpy areas!

Well done, BigOld. Been a nice weekend for riding, or at least it was in East Anglia where I was. Makes a big difference to the enjoyment factor when the wind's low and the sun's out.

Did I see you? Totally agree that they were a bit vague about the severity. I was rubbish first 40 miles, better mid 20, storming last 40. Weird. Friend I was riding with was other way round, so we were pretty slow. Stopped lots. [ ] Lovely weather though! And pretty well organised. But so tired now don't think I can finish this po............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Bloody hilly. Having looked at the profile of that Kent one i may do that instead next year, seems much more like my kind of thing (apart from that last hill of course!)

Left at about 8.30, time verrrry slow - probably an hour more than you [lots of waiting and stops, didn't bother to wait for read-out and forgot my computer...]. Good ride though. Your time was REALLY good! I found the first half pretty tough, but after the second stop [Goodwood etc] it was great! Longer and more climbing than the Circuit of Kent - the only real challenge there was that final b**tard hill. Again - excellent ride Bigold. I know, I was there.

Hi All, this is my first post on this web site.
I also did this ride yesterday so thought I'd chip in with my comments. I did the full 97 miler, but probably shouldn't have! My longest previous ride (excluding charity events), was 40 miles and I got found it yesterday big time! I live in the area (3 mile ride to the start!), and have done most of the ride in 20/30 mile sections. Until about Duncton I was feeling ok, had an average of about 17mph on my bike and then the cramp hit me! It was all down hill from there (unfortunate turn of phrase in the circumstances!), and I limped home in 7:30!! I was just glad to make it back in one piece to be honest! Anyway, well done to everyone who completed the course and thanks to those who encouraged me... If I recover in time for next year I'll make sure I do some proper training before hand! Cheers!

40 miles to 100 miles is a huge leap, well done for slogging through and finishing, you must have suffered to do that..Doing that is every bit as impressive as a gold award time, good on you!

Well done Mac. Good effort - i always say 'you gotta want it' and clearly you did. Maybe a little more training next time!?!?!?!? Any way ref recovery, eat well, hydrate well and get out tonight for a while too to spin the legs out. Mines not ideal (doing a 30 mile single speed hill route) but doing something always helps fight off the soreness.

Thanks! Felt a bit of a loser not even making bronze but don't feel so bad now! Actually I don't feel too bad today. I was feeling stiff this morning but not too bad now. I'm generally pretty fit from tennis/footy/gym and I had a good stretch during/after the ride. I'll try to get out for a quick spin tonight... before starting an astronomy course!?!

I did this last year and thought it was a very well run sportive. I missed a gold time by a few mins I think with a 5hr 42 (too long at a feed station) so I guess you must have scraped in for gold with your time BOSH??? The main thing that wore me down at the end was that I felt like the route circled Petersfield about 3 times before letting you finish!! Was looking forward to it this year but been off the bike after a hernia op a few weeks ago so 97 miles wouldn't have been a good idea! Next year.........

It's just occured to me (while explaining the mammoth scale of this ride to someone), could this event be compared to a day's ride in the Tour de France? If so, what would be a reasonable time for a tour rider to finish in?
