Carbon bars and post, why not?
      #39050 - 07/11/2008 12:50

I've read here and else where that alot of people rubbish the use of carbon in these two areas.
why is that? surely carbon is strong enough? most of us have carbon forks, if not frames, and forks breaking would be just as serious.
or is it just down to price?

Price is a huge factor but also the risk of crushing carbon, it is very strong but can be easily damaged through over tightning of clamps...you only save a few grams so the money can be best spent elsewhere!

Campagnolo....liquidation or oxidation....which will kill them first???

Agree with the above.
Lots of carbon on my bikes but when bars such as Deda 215s weigh only that why take the risk. Why spend a lot more on carbon bars and stems, to save a few grams, and wrecking them with a crash or overuse of the old elbow grease when tightening
I get twitchy tightening alloy components never mind carbon in vulnerable areas.

If your going to spend the cash on carbon bars you also need to spend the money on a torque wrench. If you tighten to the manufacturers specifications there should be no problems.

This isn't quite on topic, but I used to have some lightweight alloy bars, ITM 225s.

At some point my bike seemed to develop speed wobble, an alarming thing, particularly if you're not a great descender, as I'm not. I couldn't work out why it was happening, the wheels were true(ish), and the steel frame unbent. It just slowly got worse, from being an issue at 30+mph, to happening at 20 mph, downhill.

After quite a lot of thought I got some new bars this spring, only slightly heavier(at 255g) and they solved the problem. The lightweight bars were just slowly giving up, it seems. The most recent lightweight examples may well be stronger, but its something to bear in mind.

ive test ridden the bar and stem option and they bent all over the place BUT i have carbon seat posts(all be it high end ones) in all of my bikes and i am a big guy. Makes for a realy comfy ride and that is a real important factor for me as i have numerous back problems. Ive had one of them for 2 years and i was 20 stone when i started riding on that and its still perfect. That said owing to the potential for damage i rarely remove my seat post from my frame to lesten the risk.

Got a torque wrench and using the 50lbs ft setting seems to minimise the risk of any bolts coming loose or handle bar slipage.

The manufacturers specified 15Nm for my bars, I tightened them up to that (it didn't feel tight enough) and they have not moved since.

I have both Carbon Bars and Stem, I will admit they worry me to death!! I crashed the bars when I hit a road sign in France in the summer and there is a chip in the laquer but so far they have'nt failed (obviously!!). I've not changed the bars yet as they cost 300 quid and the missus went mad when I said i needed new ones.

The tightening torques are 6nm stem to forks and 7nm stem to bars. Very low considering some but thats what the manf state and they never seem to move.

It does seem crazy when you see that all the pro's ride aluminium bars and stems and the weights are pretty much the same just the price is a fraction of carbon.....but carbon just looks so SEXY!!

Wives don't care about stuff like that !
Mine spent £350 getting the bloody cat sorted and then complained that I'd had 2 x £30 sessions at the physio !

You should have throttled the cat, had another 10 sessions and bought her some flowers!
