    New wheels advice..

    Hi guys.
i'm getting a new wheelset next month, and can't decide which to buy. My budget is 600 quid- tops, and the wheels are for training and some racing. Does anybody have any ideas which would be best for that price range?
So far, i've been looking at American classic 420 aeros.. Mavic Ksyrium SL's, or Fulcrum 1.. but any other ideas or recommendations are definately welcome. Thanks in advance. Paul.

    Re: New wheels advice..

Mavic wheels are always really strong. I had a pair of Ksyriums for 10 years and I couldn't fault them, I am no lightweight either. Recently, I bought Shimano RS80 C24 to replace the Mavics and they are also very good wheels, smooth rolling, light and comfortable. With your budget you should be able to get the Dura Ace version, which is a bit lighter. I have not tried the others that you mention but they have all had good reviews.
The other option would be to contact a specialist wheel builder and ask their advice, but, when I bought my RS80s, I contacted 3 such specialists, and none of them could be bothered to reply, no wonder people use internet retailers.
The fashion at the moment is for deep rims, personally, I was not convinced the aero benefits outweighed the weight and cost as opposed to a normal rim, but I am prepared to be corrected on that point. An enviable position, Good Luck!

TEN years?? How many rims did you get through? My Ksyrium rims have never lasted more than 3 years before replacement.

Hi, thanks for the reply.. i was a little dubious of the deep rims as well. The ACs have quite a deep rim, and a few guys at my club swear by them, but aesthetically i prefer the Mavics i think. I've also read that the front hubs aren't the strongest in the ACs- can't remember where.. can anyone confirm this or is it untrue? Not even thought about Dura-ace yet (duh). I'll check them out as well. Cheers.

Same rims, the wheels are still going strong, though sadly not as round as they were! I should add, didn't use them in really foul weather.

I have RS80 24s on the good bike. Like them a lot. Bfergie and Buzz will probably drop by later to wax lyrical about Novatec Jetflys... also very good by all accounts.
