Bought Tacx Sirius Soft Gel Turbo Trainer : A Question Re - QR Axle?

    Hi All,

    Just bought this >
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/tacx-sirius-...FU3HtAoddDkAWw

had it for a bargain price second hand! It's in perfect condition and in good working order; But I've lost the small split-ring that stops the the QR locking lever from coming out of the axle. Should I get a new QR axle or can I get hold of a small split ring that will fit?

It's Trivial I know; But I like everything working perfectly. Oh also appreciate your opinion on the Turbo Trainer.

Opinion: You've bought it now so don't use another then you'll have nothing to compare it against, ergo it's great

Good luck getting a split ring, I tried lots of places to get one for a tap barrel and failed. So just keep an eye on the lever when you are locking the wheel, when locked it won't move. I know you're supposed to use the proper QR from Tacx but I've used a Shimano one before when I couldn't find it in the toolbox.

Unless you're going to have a bike set up in the TT for a long time, you might want to prepare an old wheel with a TT tyre. Plus get a wedge to prop up the front wheel.

    Cheers Allez,

I'm using the QR that Tacx supply; but I need to ensure it's uppermost on the axle at all times. I would like to find a suitable Circlip that stops the QR lever dropping out when it's rotated. As you say; it's fine when locked up. I may look for a suitable QR as a replacement if I cannot find a circlip? I'm using some books to prop the front wheel at present. I have a spare wheel with a 6, speed Free-Wheel fitted, I'm wondering if it would be suitable to use? the bike is 10, speed cassette, should I use the six speed or look for a cheap 10, speed old wheel with tyre for the TT.? I quite like the Tacx TT I got it as a bargain = Less than 30% of the original price new. Do you also have the Tacx Sirius? you mentioned using a Shimano QR in place of the original Tacx QR. Would that have to be a certain type of Shimano QR? one that fits in the hollowed ends.

    Thanks

    It's not a circlip, it's called an "e-clip".

For all the hassle it'll be finding one the right size you might as well just buy a new one, they cost about £10 + p&p.

I spotted that a Tacx QR is around a tenner, so you might as well get that and be sure that it will work.

As for using a 6 speed cassette, if you are going to set the bike up and not use its gears (assuming you find a sprocket that is indexed to the rear mech) but just use the resistance setting of the TT, I suppose then that should be OK.

If you want to use the gears then you'll need a matching cassette, but you can drop down the groupsets. The TT tyres are designed to better withstand the heat (they say), but have a look around as they can be got for well under RRP - my Tacx tyre was under £20 so cheaper than my road tyres.

Mostyn, haven't you got a new set of wheels? You could use the old rear wheel for the TT.

    Thanks Andrew,

I'll try for a Circlip E-clip before buying a new QR, as the one I have works OK, just annoying when you release the wheel; and the locking mech drops out.

    Hi Allez,

"Mostyn, haven't you got a new set of wheels? You could use the old rear wheel for the TT."

I have; but the older wheels are also a nice set of wheels and I'm not using my Carbon Cube on the TT. I'm putting the Ridley X-Ride on it = 10, speed cassette 12/25, Maybe get a spare tyre as you suggested? BTW, can an MTB be used on this model Tacx Sirius? Without me having to alter anything?
