    Buying Garmin 800 advice please!

    Hi
I am deciding between buying the Garmin 800 (enduro) with OS maps and the Garmin 800 with road maps (inc European maps). I originally thought I would buy the one with the OS maps. What are people's experiences?
    I would use it for:
    - long road cycle rides in the UK (main use)
    - commuting in London (also main use)
    - walking/hiking (less so but would be useful and really great to have the maps).

For example, if I am commuting in London will having the OS maps on the enduro version be a problem?
Will I not be able to see clearly which roads to take and will the detail of small urban roads be less on this version?
Can it also be used for running?

    thanks
    Satu

    Hi Satu

I think you will find that all 800 are the same unit (base map only), the difference is in what SD card (this is were the maps are stored) comes with the unit. Also you can have multiple maps on the SD card (size dependent, locked or not) and turn them off if you want.

PS you can get free maps in garmin format(.img) from the web

Thanks that is helpful. I think I am going to go with the enduro. Seems like a lot of money but am going to give it a go! Can I also get road maps for Mallorca and Lanzarote for free for the Garmin?
I'll also check the links you have given below.
    Happy cycling!

I haven't got the Edge 800 (only the 500) but do have a Dakota 20 with full OSGB 1:50k maps. On the Dakota there are map view settings to set the render to 'automobile' which switches the map style to look just like a Garmin car sat-nav. I would suspect that the Edge 800/810 will have the same capability.

You can also use the pre-compiled OpenStreetMap mapsets for Garmin from TalkyToaster (just google it).
