?? Pedal Thread Size? All Pedal Threads the Same?

Been riding bikes for almost 60, years; and have yet to find a pedal that wouldn't interchange with any crank! MTB to Road, or Hybrid even kids bikes the pedals have fitted all! In fact I've recently used my MTB pedals on my Road Bike, also swapped Shimano to campag and many other variations without any problem.

But, I read on the internet today, that there is more than one thread size for pedals? Is there? it's a new one to me! i've not come across any - even my Time pedals fit all crank threads.

Anyone know of other size threads and are they common?

The usual standard is 9/16 x 20tpi, but there have been others over the years. I live in France and I've come across older French bikes with 14mm threads. I believe some older American threads were different too. There used to be loads of different national standards for stuff like headsets, bottom brackets, hub freewheel threads etc. It's only relatively recently that everything's been boiled down to a few international standards.

Yes, I think 9/16,ths. Has pretty much been the standard for many years; and although there are a few designer pedals with differing threads - like some of the BMX pedals being an 1/2, in thread. But even some of my pedals from the 1960's will fit perfectly on my 2011 chainset cranks on my Carbon Bike also my MTB bikes. I think the rule-of-thumb is 9/16. for the majority of pedals for road, MTB or Hybrid Bikes.
