I'm pretty sure I heard it before too, Wuv. I seem to recall it being said that there are only three sports - horse racing, shooting wildfowl, and possibly angling or sailing or something like that (I'm uncertain about the third) - and that all else are games. It struck me as an incredibly aristo view of the world.

Also, if shooting is one of only three true "sports", why do they call the cannon fodder "Game"?

"Hunting, shooting and fishing are sports. The rest are merely games". I don't know who coined the phrase, but as you say it seems to be quite an upper class view.
